* Torrontés is celebrated in Argentina in October.

Considered the most famous native variety, it is one of the most widely spread white wines from north to south, achieving notable international recognition due to its high oenological value. It is found only in Argentina and has become the signature white wine of the country.

Did you know that the Torrontés variety is produced only in Argentina?

Genotypic studies indicate that this grapevine comes from a cross between the Criolla Chica or Listán Prieto (introduced by the Spanish into the country) and the Muscat of Alexandria or Moscatel of Alexandria, brought by the Jesuits. There are three recognized types in Argentina: Torrontés Riojano, Sanjuanino, and Mendocino.

The Torrontés Riojano, known for its high oenological quality, is the most widespread in the national grapevine and produces Argentina’s iconic white wine. It is ideal for making aromatic wines and adapts very well to all regions, especially those at higher altitudes such as the northwest Argentine region.

It pairs excellently with fish and seafood, as well as with the regional cuisine of northwest Argentina, especially empanadas and the traditional locro. It also goes well with spicy and well-seasoned dishes, such as Thai, Indian, Chinese, and Vietnamese cuisine.

Torrontés wine is light yellow in color, sometimes developing golden and green hues. It is characterized by its floral aromas reminiscent of orange blossom, rose, jasmine, and geranium, along with fruity notes reminiscent of sweet white grapes and tropical fruits. It can occasionally present a slightly spicy character. Although its aromas might suggest a sweet wine, on the palate, it is dry with a refreshing acidity.

Cultivated Area and Regions

Mainly present in the NOA (Northwest Argentina), Torrontés (Riojano, Sanjuanino, and Mendocino) recorded a total of 8,845 hectares cultivated in 2024, representing 4.4% of the country’s total vineyard area.

Mendoza has the largest number of hectares, reaching 3,482 hectares in 2024 (39.4%), followed by San Juan with 2,225 hectares (25.2%), La Rioja with 1,786 hectares (20.2%), and the remaining provinces with 1,351 hectares (15.3%).

The cultivated area of Torrontés Riojano in the country (7,075 hectares) places it second among white varieties used for winemaking.

Unique Identity

With its fragrance of flowers, white fruits, and citrus as a personal hallmark, it has experienced a resurgence alongside the strong performance of Argentine white wines. Today, it offers a wide range of expressions, from the traditional and exuberant styles of northwest Argentina to the delicate and light wines produced in cooler areas and higher altitudes.
